Echoes of America Journal • A journey through our land and its stories
America’s story is written across a remarkable landscape: along broad rivers and quiet country roads, in busy ports and small-town main streets, across open prairies and mountain ranges, and in the places where generations of people have made their homes. Echoes of America Journal is a celebration of that land and the many people whose lives, work, hopes, and struggles have shaped it.
The land, the people, the story
Here, we’ll travel through American history one story at a time. We’ll follow the great rivers that carried goods and ideas, visit the small towns where community life unfolded, explore landscapes that inspired artists and travelers, and remember the everyday people whose names may never appear in a textbook but whose lives helped build the country.
Some stories will reach back to the nation’s early years; others will explore the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when railroads, industry, migration, and changing ways of life transformed familiar places. We’ll look at beauty and achievement, but also at hardship, conflict, and the people whose experiences have too often been overlooked. America’s history is richer when we make room for all of these echoes.
A moving picture of America
To begin, enjoy this PBS preview of Ken Burns’s documentary series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. Its sweeping landscapes and stories of people working to preserve special places offer a fitting introduction to one part of our shared American story.
